We have studied how mammalian cells adapt to hypoxic environment since 1999. Especially, we focus on HIF-dependent transcription of genes essential for cellular adaptation to hypoxia. HIF, hypoxia-inducible factor is now reviewed as the master to orchestrate expressions of about 60 genes and as a compelling target in developing drugs for many hypoxia-associated diseases, such as cancer, anemia, and cardiovascular diseases. We are studying the molecular mechanism underlying HIF regulation and also searching for novel chemicals to control HIF level or activity.
