The Department of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology was founded in September 1954 for the first time in Korea. The department has played a pivotal role in the study of parasitology and the control of parasitic infections. Especially, the department had contributed tremendously to the national project to eliminate parasitic infections such as roundworm, whipworm, hookworm infection, etc. In addition, the major research activities had focused on, but not limited to, the epidemiologic survey and control of parasitic infections such as clonorchiasis, filariasis, enterobiasis, and intestinal trematodes infections. Based on the successes in these activities, the department has expanded its activity area worldwide to transfer the key to the success in controlling parasitic infections and to help improve capabilities in diagnosing parasitic infections for people in developing countries including China, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Cambodia, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Tanzania, Fiji, Ecuador and Peru. Currently, research activities are focusing on host-parasite interaction that can be applied to improve human welfare and on global health ODA projects in tropical areas suffering from parasitic infections.
